Biblical: name borne by a son of Moses (Exodus 2: 22). The name possibly means ‘exile’ (i.e. a person in exile) in Hebrew, but it is usually interpreted as ‘sojourner’, from Hebrew ger sham meaning ‘a stranger there’.
